Chaiwala Tiger Tips

  • If you’re using dairy, whole milk works best.
  • Oat milk is the best milk substitute for masala chai. If you’re using plant based milk, the exact ratio of water to plant based milk will depend on its consistency and thickness.
  • If you want your chai sweet, sugar tastes better than honey. Add it when you’re preparing your chai on the stovetop.
  • If you want iced chai, prepare it as you would usually would over a stovetop, then strain and stick it in the refrigerator for a few hours. When chilled, serve over ice.

Perfect for an Afternoon in the Garden

If you’re looking for a mild chai that gives you a caffeine pop, as well, this is your tea!

The fragrance from the bag is strong with ginger and cloves, warmed by the aroma of the Assam black tea. Poured into my strainer, the product is, well, adorable! It’s crumbly, multi-colored, intriguing. As I poured, the brew was instantly rich and dark, so steeping was less than 30 seconds. The aroma was mild, with the pepper taking front and center.

The taste is warm, but light. My sister, a traditional “overwhelm me with the spices” kind of chai drinker — found it “delightfully mild.” Interestingly, the cardamon, ginger, and cinnamon tend to hit the soft palate and linger there for several beats, so the aftertaste is stronger than the taste from the initial sip. I personally find this interesting, albeit not always useful — this is definitely a tea I will enjoy in the afternoon, sitting out in the spring sunshine in my garden. This is not a tea I will drink with food (though it was lovely with a piece of salted dark chocolate caramel).

Overall, as someone who is not inherently a chai drinker, I found the Masala Chai very tasteful and aromatic, delightful and enjoyable. I would highly recommend it to those who do not like to be knocked over by the spices, but want something individual and warming.

I’ve been searching for a masala chai like this!

I love a well-spiced chai - and this one is the epitome of a well-spiced chai. I prepared this according to the instructions (though I tweaked the milk/water ratio to have a bit more milk in it). The resulting beverage was fragrant, smooth, fully-spiced without being overly spiced, and delicious. I enjoyed drinking it out of the kulhad I ordered.

Delicious!

This is now my new favorite chai. I’m drinking it as I write this. It’s full of flavor, but not too spicy. It’s fragrant and warming- perfect for a winter’s day.

Tea-riffic Q&A Sips

Masala chai is a blend of black crush, tear and curl (CTC) tea and spices.

Although rumor has it that the origins of chai can be traced back 5000-9000 years ago to an Indian king who ordered a traditional healing beverage to be made using Ayurveda herbs and spices, chai was not a beverage popularly consumed in India until it was colonized by the British and the East Indian Company started to manufacture and trade in tea.

In addition to black CTC tea other spices include ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, black pepper, star anise, fennel, etc. Every household and state in India has their own special recipe.

Make sure the chai blend has a good quality CTC, which depends on the grade and also is single origin, directly sourced and fresh. Ensure that the ingredients are natural and not artificial flavoring. Our masala chai has real ginger, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon and black pepper. As compared to other brands, our masala chai is rich in ginger and cardamom and has lower quantities of cinnamon ensuring a beautiful zesty and aromatic blend.

Masla Chai is traditionally made over a stove top. If you wish to steep your chai, take 2-3 teaspoons (4-6g) of our masala chai blend and insert it in a disposable tea bag or tea infuser and place it in 4-6 fl-oz of boiling water in a tea cup. Steep for 4-5 minutes and remove the chai masala tea bag or infuser. Add a dash of milk and sugar if desired. If you are looking for chai tea bags, take a look at our Blue Chai which has butterfly blue pea flowers, chai spices and is caffeine-free.
