I still remember my first Pumpkin Spice Latte while attending a pediatric sub-internship rotation in Houston. There was a Starbucks right outside the hospital. it was the month of September, and everyone was ordering PSL, so I wanted to try one, too. I ordered a grande and took my first sip when they handed it to me. I wasn’t very impressed by the extremely sugary, sweet fall favorite drink! After a few sips, I felt nauseated and could no longer drink. I realized then that just like the Starbucks chai latte when it came to PSL, I was a nonbeliever and uninitiated. I have stayed away since; maybe I would give it a try if someone gave me a Starbucks pumpkin spice latte substitute like a sugar-free pumpkin spice latte or an unsweetened pumpkin coffee or pumpkin cappuccino, but in any case, drinking coffee for me is a rarity.

Pumpkin Spice Latte Alternatives

So, if you are just like me, not a fan of pumpkin spice lattes and not a coffee drinker, I would like to give you my recommendations for fall lattes from the Herbs & Kettles collection. Our OG Masala Chai or any unique chai blends such as Vanilla Lavender Chai, Rose Cardamom Chai, Saffron Chai, or Cocoa Chai would be wonderful options. Our herbal lattes, such as Cleansing Golden Latte, Calming Golden Turmeric Latte, Wild Cinnamon Latte, and Spiced Adaptogen Lattes, are also superb, easy to make as instant teas, and extremely healthy. If you are looking for something without milk or cream, I would recommend trying our other herbal blends in tea bags like Golden Tranquility for a quick steep or our delicious loose leaf artisanal tea blends like Kashmiri Kahwa, a fall favorite. If you are a loose leaf tea lover, our fantastic regional directly sourced teas are just wonderful, exactly what you need to feel grounded and peaceful. Whether you are looking for a hot cup to keep you cozy on a chilly fall day or an iced drink to enjoy the last few days of warmth, we have you covered.

Pumpkin Spice Chai Latte Recipe

Pumpkins, corn mazes, hayrides, and apple orchards are reminiscent of our times in Michigan. Every year, we looked forward to the wonderful adventures that fall brought - pumpkin carving and apple picking with our friends. While in Michigan, we created a Starbucks pumpkin spice latte alternative, which I have perfected since. It is our very own recipe for Pumpkin Spice Chai Latte using Herbs & Kettles Masala Chai and Wild Cinnamon Latte. Our version is a healthier, dairy free, vegan, pumpkin spiced latte recipe, definitely one of our fall favorites and great for the change in season.

Ingredients:

  • 2 teaspoons (4 g) Herbs & Kettles Masala Chai
  • 1 teaspoon Herbs & Kettles Wild Cinnamon Latte
  • 1 cup gluten free oat milk
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 cup unsweetened Pumpkin Puree (either canned or homemade)
  • 1 drop Vanilla Extract
  • Sweetener of your choice: we enjoy brown sugar, but date or maple syrup are other options

Method:

  • Take the pumpkin puree, Wild Cinnamon Latte, vanilla extract and brown sugar in a saucepan and let it cook until darkened on low-medium heat, stirring continuously so that the mixture doesn't burn.
  • Add ½ cup water and 1 cup oat milk and let it come to a boil. Add 2 teaspoons of Masala Chai and simmer for 3- 5 minutes.
  • Strain into a glass container and froth before pouring it into individual size cups.
  • Sprinkle some brown sugar over the froth and garnish with a cinnamon stick.

Your Pumpkin Spice Chai Latte is ready! If you want an iced pumpkin spice latte, you could let it chill and serve over ice.

Cinderella Latte

Cinderella Latte is a famed secret Starbucks drink where if you would like to order it, you have to let your barista know that you want one pump of pumpkin spice and one pump of mocha sauce in your PSL. To me, that's again a recipe for a toothache (or stomache). While researching for this blog, I came across Cinderella Tea, which sounded like a vibrant fall latte that you might enjoy. Cinderella Tea, also known as Butterfly Pea Flower Tea, has a gorgeous blue hue that turns purple with the addition of lime, and this transformation is just as magical as that of Cinderella’s ball gown, hence the name Cinderella Tea. To prepare Cinderella Tea, steep a tea bag of Herbs & Kettles Blue Chai in near boiling water for 5 minutes, a sweetener of your choice, and a splash of frothy milk. The beautiful blue chai latte is cozy, caffeine free, and just what you need to snuggle up with while you witness the change of seasons.

In conclusion, be creative and enjoy the fall season. Explore the beautiful changes that nature brings and seek inspiration to ground yourself. Get on the mat for yoga, meditation, tea, or maybe even a pumpkin spice chai latte!
